It was the night before the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr, and Maryam Dadabhoy’s celebrations were on hold as she anxiously waited to find out whether she would be celebrating the next morning or would have to fast for another day for the holy month of Ramadan. The mosque near her in-laws’ home in Mississauga had already announced that Eid would be the next day — having based their decision on pre-determined astronomical calculations and scientific data.
