Tumblr Muslims need a little good news

I don’t know about the rest of the tumblr muslims out there, but all these reports and reblogs of the despicable acts of hatred done towards our community has really taken its toll on ending off this holy month on a high note.

Which is why I think its so important that stories like THIS get more attention:

I first met brother Himy (@HiMYSYeD, himysyed.tumblr.com) at a masjid two weeks ago, I was a little hesitant to approach him because of his pseudo-celebrity status in my eyes. Getting the idea from a few folks down in the states, Brother Himy has been on the quest of biking to 30 Masajid within the Greater Toronto Area for the month of Ramadan – you can follow his progress at 30masjids.com.

This was taken in the Beaches in Toronto on a spring day. The path has been worn down by those who have tread the path of the labyrinth. Thanks Himy for drawing it out.

The Naked Untruth

Just this week the mayor stated that 70% of the phone calls he’s received have been in favour of removing the bike lanes. But as HiMY SYeD tweeted today, when he called to register his pro-bike lane view a staffer for the mayor informed him they weren’t keeping track of who called or their position on the matter. Where’s the mayor’s information coming from then?

Social media: Cleaning up in Egypt

Thousands of people remained in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on Saturday morning after ousted president Hosni Mubarak announced his resignation the previous evening. Many anti-government protesters have begun to clean up after weeks of demonstrations.

Meanwhile, people in cities across Canada gathered to hold celebratory rallies on Saturday afternoon.

Joe Pantalone 51.6%  | George Smitherman 22.6%  | Himy Syed 12.9%
Toronto Mayor Round 6

By John Ford, Vote By Choice
OTTAWA – People participating in a Ranked Choice Voting experiment have cast ballots parallel to the 2010 Ontario municipal elections.
While in the experiment the Ottawa Mayoral contest was won on the first ballot, the Toronto Mayor was elected after six ballots needed to break the fifty percent plus one threshold.
Joe Pantalone was able to achieve 51.6% with distributed votes from dropped candidates Rob Ford, Sarah Thomson, and Abdullah-Baquie Ghazi.
George Smitherman reached 22.6% …

Filling the progressive void

By Greg Burrell, The General Ledger
Back near the beginning of the election campaign in Toronto, I wrote a post blasting the leading candidates for their lack of progressive ideas and unwillingness to fight for the people of Toronto (Toronto’s progressive political void, 17 June 2010). I commented that the race for mayor of Toronto had been disappointing for all progressives, especially because of media skewing the issues that matter, and the long campaign certainly has been nothing but disappointing. Adam Giambrone’s campaign self-destructed long before we were able to hear his …

Mayoral Endorsement III

By CitySlikr in All Fired Up In The Big Smoke
My Endorsement For Mayor: HiMY SYeD.
He calls himself The Peoples’ Mayor. It is not empty campaign rhetoric. As Mr. SYeD correctly points out, this race has been all about things. Tax cuts, subways and gravy trains. Where are the people?
Semantics, you say? A little, perhaps. But our front running candidates have all been talking about what they are going to do for people, to people. HiMY SYeD talks about what he’ll do with people. Civic engagement sits at …

Feisty Toronto mayoral debate cut short at The 519

By Andrea Houston, Xtra
Rob Ford may not have been at the mayoral debate at The 519 Church Street Community Centre Monday night, but that didn’t stop the two other candidates or audience members from calling him a coward for not showing up.
Even before the debate got rolling, moderator Mathieu Chantelois called Ford’s absence “disappointing.”
“He’s scared!” someone yelled from the middle of the audience, a standing-room-only crowd numbering around 300, which was largely divided between those wearing green Joe Pantalone shirts or purple George Smitherman …

Vision Quest I

From All Fired Up In The Big Smoke
This one’s mine.
My colleagues here at All Fired Up in the Big Smoke are too compromised. Too caught up in the race. Too waist deep into the mindset of strategic voting and settling for A.B.F.
I am an old hippie. It’s not a label I shun. In fact, I embrace it.
As an old hippie, I retain a mighty mistrust of institutions, especially those ones that influence us greatly but seem impervious to our presence. Those we can only ignore as …

The Unincumbents – Meet the underdogs

By Katie Daubs, Toronto Star
Ken Wood can’t afford glitzy t-shirts. His campaign office is his basement apartment and his best asset is his colour printer.
“I’m the poor people’s candidate,” Wood told a group of would-be councillors, adding that he lives off a disability allowance.
Mayoral candidate HiMY SYeD, (who spells his name with lower-case vowels in homage to a former teacher) held a gathering for “unincumbent” candidates like Wood at the Dovercourt Baptist Church on Monday. Since nine councillors are retiring or running for mayor this year, …

The Real Fringe Candidates

Yesterday was a decisive day in the 2010 campaign for mayor of Toronto because September 13th will be seen as the moment we finally achieved critical mass for crazy. In taking the battle for the Spadina Expressway underground, Rocco Rossi firmly confirmed his divisive status, going for broke with a full frontal assault on the downtown core in an effort to endear himself to those dwelling both physically and psychologically in Ford Country. We wish Mr. Rossi well in whatever future endeavours he pursues after …

Morning Brew: Underdog council hopefuls hold rally

By Matthew Woolley, blogTO
A gathering for “unincumbent” council candidates organized by mayoral candidate HiMY SYeD was held at Dovercourt Baptist Church yesterday.
About a dozen participated in the underdog’s pep rally – with nine city councillors retiring or running for mayor, it is an unusually open year for council candidates from any background or experience level.
But unlike their more visible, mayoral counterparts, these DIYers came out to encourage each other and swap stories.
“We’re all coming at you like vultures,” one candidate said.
When they’re off …

EDITORIAL: In search of a mayor

Editorial in Share, Canada’s Largest Ethnic Newspaper
Former Ontario Conservative Party leader, John Tory, has put an end to speculation over his plans for October’s mayoralty race. He is not running.
Tory, who is already very active in civic life as Co-chair of the Toronto City Summit Alliance and has his own radio talk show, has made it clear that he will not run for mayor of Toronto a second time. This should end the public’s (and mainstream media’s) infatuation with the idea.
In response, a Toronto Star editorial stated, apparently without any intention …

More Mayoral candidates than the Media 5

By Bryan Heal, The Life of Bryan
It is unfortunate that of 30+ Mayoral candidates, we only hear of five getting respectable media coverage.
Several others have great goals for out city, and in a time where Toronto is facing big challenges – all good ideas deserve to be heard.
This weekend’s goal, if you can spare a few minutes: Search online and look up the candidacies of Rocco Achampong & HiMY SYeD.

Meet A Mayoral Candidate XVII

Now, we don’t want anybody to finish this post and walk away thinking it’s an out-and-out endorsement of Mr. SYeD. It’s too early for that. Questions still remain that need to be answered. But we will confess to having somewhat of a crush on the candidate, politically speaking of course. So consider what follows to be an unapologetic endorsement of HiMY SYeD being taken very, very seriously as a candidate for mayor of Toronto in 2010.

Mike Layton And The NDP Machine In Toronto

By Adrian MacNair
If you read Friday Photography’s opening paragraph yesterday, you’ll note that I said there are some stories I’ve been working on. One was a story I found out about through a friend after Mike Layton announced his intent to run in Toronto’s Ward 19, Joe Pantalone’s old haunt that he’s vacated to run for mayor. So by the time I learned of the news, it had already been several days since the mainstream media had written up their quick and dirty stories …

A snowstorm in Toronto, oh me, oh my!

By Mary Vallis, National Post

The way that AM radio stations are going on about the first major snowstorm to hit Toronto overnight, you would think the city is under siege. It’s December. It’s snowing. Where is the surprise?
Sure, those icy snow pellets sting your face and mean you have to clean off the car for the commute, for which drivers are advised to leave an hour early this morning. But all things considered, the morning has been relatively wrinkle-free.
The Ontario Provincial Police are tending to accidents on all the major …

UPDATED: Dump site is the Pits – Residents fume over possible trash-stash plan

By DON PEAT, The Toronto Sun/ SUN MEDIA
Last Updated: June 25, 2009 5:22pm
Even before the city has announced locations of temporary dump sites, residents are threatening to boycott and set up pickets at the dump sites.
Christie Pits residents told the Sun that if the park is made into a temporary dump site, as is expected to be announced this afternoon, they’ll do whatever they can legally to keep the Pits from filling up with garbage.
“I think it’s a reasonable thing to voice our opposition in every possible legal …

Dump site is the Pits – Residents fume over possible trash-stash plan

By DON PEAT, The Toronto Sun, SUN MEDIA
Last Updated: 25th June 2009, 9:22am
Christie Pits residents are fuming at the thought their beloved park could be turned into a temporary dump.
While the city has yet to announce the location for its new temporary dump sites, residents see temporary fencing being set up and figure the park is about to get filled with garbage.
Friends of Christie Pits say the decision stinks, especially after watching the 2002 strike ruin the park with piles of garbage from the 16-day city strike.
The group is planning a protest for 11 a.m. today …

NADJA SAYEJ
Special to Globe and Mail
December 20, 2008
When Torontoist announced it was going dark , a catfight broke out over the domain name Torontoest. One group , started by Torontoist contributing editor Jonathan Goldsbie on Facebook , called for a new site capturing the old site’s zeitgeist.
The other party was web designer Himy Syed, who registered the domain name for $13.50 and slapped up a splash page saying Torontoest.com would launch this past Thursday.
Mr. Syed wanted to include stories in Mandarin and Hindi and segments dubbed the …

Desi Life Magazine | The Eid dilemma – Debate and disagreement over exactly when the holiday should begin mar celebrations and frustrate GTA Muslims

By Noor Javed, Desi Life Magazine, November-December 2008, Page 16-17
It was the night before the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr, and Maryam Dadabhoy’s celebrations were on hold as she anxiously waited to find out whether she would be celebrating the next morning or would have to fast for another day for the holy month of Ramadan. The mosque near her in-laws’ home in Mississauga had already announced that Eid would be the next day — having based their decision on pre-determined astronomical calculations and scientific data.
Across town, near Scarborough and …
